Coolidge X

2009/6/24Without a doubt, the single most important event in the progress of radiology was the invention by William Coolidge in 1913 of what came to be known as the Coolidge x-ray tube. Nevertheless, d espite its clear superiority, the Coolidge tube did not immediately replace cold cathode tubes - the latter continued to be manufactured into the 1920s and saw routine use into the 1930s.

The X

The X-ray window is a portion of the tube envelope which is thinner than the rest of the structure to allow X-ray output from the tube, minimising radiation absorption. The wire penetrating the glass seals at the end of the tube is known as Dumet wire, a copper-coated alloy of nickel and iron that has the same coefficient of expansion as the glass.

Managing the Heat Produced by X

The X-ray tube begins to short circuit, or arc, which in turn liberates more gas that further degrades the internal vacuum, resulting in an X-ray tube that no longer functions. The second failure mode caused by improper heat dissipation is the liberation of damaging ions.

X Ray Tubes

The X-ray tube (Figure 2) is the source of high-energy X-ray photons used to excite characteristic fluorescence radiation in the sample. The X-ray flux is generated when a beam of electrons, emitted from an incandescent filament, is accelerated through a large potential difference (normally in the range 20–100 kV) and directed at a metallic anode.
